‘INTERIOR/EXTERIOR’

I thought about what I could use for the theme of this project, thinking of how in my project proposal that i wanted to somehow make a connection between my work and people, maybe making my work a personal thing or something that everyone can relate to. And thinking along those lines, I decided that titling my project ‘Interior/Exterior’ would be a good start. Therefore, if my ideas change with what I ordinally was doing, the title will still be able to stay the same.

I also mentioned that I would like to take some ideas from my previous project and include them within this project, and so for now I am using the idea of the physical body parts such as organs to kick start this project.

So here, I started using watercolour paints to do an image of a skull whilst drawing small mind-maps of what types of materials and objects I could use to begin with my primary research and development.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

‘INTERIOR/EXTERIOR’

To start with, for this project, I want to try use one of my previous projects from last year as a starting point for this years project. I aim to develop sections from the last project further and make and experiment with a range of materials, so hopefully I come out with an interesting outcome in the end.

I hope to explore with materials such as raw meats, fabrics and a range of mediums to support my ideas and development throughout the project. I want to somehow use the idea along of there being discomfort within my project so my work is impactive on the audience. I would like to explore with ideas that my audience and viewers might be able to relate to of reference to personally. I like to have my work interactive in both physically and/or emotionally. Though this year due to the pandemic, having a physically interactive piece is as of now not suitable.

In most of my projects, I try to create a connection between my artwork and myself or my audience, so if I am able to use a theme which links both physical and emotional topics into the project idea, I think my work will then hold a strong image. And to do this, I will also have to think about my processes and explain how my method of making and materials are relevant to the theme concept.

I want to look into textures of my materials, detail is important in ways of presenting. So it would be interesting to use materials that are quite textural. I want to be able to try make my practice work and experimentation visually interesting. Therefore, I will have to consider my choice of material and medium usage.

I want to look at artist that are relevant to the theme I choose, and artist that may use the same materials or processes as myself through the project and development. My weak areas in a project are more of where I have a lack of artist research, so I aim to improve in this. As well as gathering more feedback from my peers to help push my ideas and development further.

Artist to consider researching: Damien Hirst, Louise Bourgeois, Helen Chadwick, Marc Quinn etc.

With the situation of the pandemic, I also need to bear in mind what I am available to use and have access to. For example, my work space needs to be accessible at both home and college, my materials and equipment need to be affordable and transportable, should we go into another lockdown. And presentation space, exhibition space and digitally showcased. Though, I can think later on in the project.

I will be using my WordPress blog (This blog) to update my projects developments throughout the course of this year.

TUTORIAL FEEDBACK

feedback from Julian

So I had a talk with Julian and I found it very interesting and helpful. I discussed some of the ideas I had in relation to my past project using organs and inner body parts, to which I explained making ‘interior/exterior’

When we think about it, we don’t think much of what’s inside us. And so being able to show someone of what we have can be quite disturbing. This also links into the idea of life and death.

I want to somehow combine the physical with our thoughts using materials and processes, to develop a visual representation of our form and consciousness.

Artist and practitioners to look into: Marc Quinn, Damien Hirst, Gunther von Hargen, Leonardo da Vinci, Helen Chadwick, Hadzi-Vasileva

Starting my specialist studio practice~

So to begin this project, I decided to look at the forms Tom handed to me and picked out some interesting ideas that I could consider to use for my 3rd year studio practice.

I made a small page with some mind maps so I could start plotting ideas and drafts of what I think I would like to do. Tom mentioned that we could always use an idea from a different project we’ve done before, so I thought back to which projects I was really into or that I thought could go further.

I concluded that I would like to take forward some ideas from my ‘negotiated project’ which consisted of me looking at the human anatomy and organs. I enjoyed that previous project because I was using things like raw meat and inks as a main material use and they’re materials I had never really used before.

A task to start of, is that I need to produce a 500 word proposal of what I want to explore and experiment with during this practice. And have a talk with the tutors on any ideas and recommendations to artist research.

I will be uploading my project sketchbook development on this blog with images and annotations on my progress. I look forward to seeing what happens with this project.

Developing final outcome

This is just a brief of what I intend to display for my final piece, I will upload more details with the process pretty soon.

I have completed both pieces of work now, so I will upload the images once I have decided which photographs are better to use, and give an evaluation on it too.

wire map 2.0

progressing forward with one of my final ideas, a large scale wire map on wall
Here are a couple of the sections I decided to work with from the map template
I made each wire form by hand and a pair of pliers, using a thick wire to strengthen the hold of the shape and proceeded to use a thinner wire to form the more detailed areas

Ideas for final outcome

These are some ideas that I thought would be interesting to see as the main outcome.

I came to the conclusion that I will be using my sewn map that was originally an experimental piece as part of my final. With what I’ve made so far in the project, I feel like this piece was one of my strongest pieces of work that holds and expresses its meaning behind it.

Therefore, I’ve decided to make the second idea towards development work and will progress from there.
